Rod Herrin, M.D.: SportsCare Co-Medical Director
Rodney Herrin, M.D. is the medical director of Memorial's SportsCare. He has specialized fellowship training in sports medicine, and is a clinical associate professor at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. He is also a fellow in the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and an orthopedic surgeon at the Orthopedic Center of Illinois in Springfield. Dr. Herrin served as chairman of the Department of Orthopedics at Memorial Medical Center.
A recipient of the Avery Brundage scholarship for gifted students and exceptional athletes while at the University of Illinois, Dr. Herrin is a member of the American Medical Association, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, and the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine. He participated in football, basketball and track in high school, played collegiate basketball, and keeps active today playing golf and basketball.
Brett Wolters, M.D.: SportsCare Co-Medical Director
Dr. Wolters attended Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and completed his orthopedic surgery residency in 2001. He later completed an orthopedic sports medicine fellowship at TRIA Orthopedic Center in Minneapolis, where he treated professional athletes from the Minnesota Twins, Vikings, Timberwolves and Wild. He also treated high school and college athletes.
His primary interests include knee, shoulder, hip, elbow and ankle problems and injuries. Dr. Wolters is particularly interested in treating injured athletes and getting them back on the field as quickly as possible.
John O. Watson, M.D.: SportsCare Orthopedic Physiatrist
Dr. John Watson is fully trained in our ImPACT™ testing program. He specializes in nonoperative musculoskeletal and sports medicine, with a particular interest in disorders of the spine and sports concussion.
Dr. Watson is a graduate of Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and completed his residency training at the University of Colorado. He is board certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and by the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine. He is also board certified in sports medicine and was fellowship trained in interventional spine and sports medicine through the department of Orthopedic Surgery at Washington University in St. Louis.
He is a fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine. He is a member of the Sangamon County Medical Society, the Illinois State Medical Society, the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, the North American Spine Society and the American College of Sports Medicine.
Rishi Sharma, MD: Sports Medicine Physician
Dr. Sharma specializes in non-surgical orthopedics and sports medicine with a special interest in tendon management. He is an orthopedic physician with Springfield Clinic. He graduated medical school from Meerut University/Santosh Medical College in India. He completed a family and community medicine residency at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, where he gained valuable sports medicine experience by working with the Southern Illinois Minors, the SIU Salukis, John A. Logan Community College and various high schools in southern Illinois. He completed a primary care sports medicine fellowship in Columbus, Ohio, where he treated athletes from the Columbus Blue Jackets, Ohio University, Denison University, the AVP tour, WWE, and various high schools. He currently works with athletes at various mixed martial arts organizations in central Illinois as well as high schools throughout the community
John Gee, PT, OCS, was named SportsCare of Illinois' clinical coordinator in July, 2005. He received his M.S. in Physical Therapy at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions, Utah. He gained orthopedic clinical specialty status in 2009. John has a Certificate of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (McKenzie certified), a diploma of Occupational Health Practice from Otago University, was a Proficiency Ambulance Officer and a Level two ski patroller certificate. Currently a PADI Assistant Instructor, he is training for skills to teach disabled veterans to dive.
John's knowledge of sports, orthopedic and occupational health allowed him to operate his own practice in New Zealand before coming to SportsCare. His coaching activities have included junior soccer and ski patrol leader. He is involved in triathlons primarily, and has participated in mountaineering, ice and rock climbing, in-line skate racing, skiing, and scuba diving.
Stacy Curtis, PT, PES joined the SportsCare team in November, 2005. She is a Certified Sportsmetrics™ Instructor and a certified Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES) through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. Stacy is also a member of the American Physical Therapy Association of Sports Therapy and Orthopedics Specialty Groups. She has outpatient orthopedic and sports medicine experience.
She is a graduate of Bradley University where she earned her degree in physical therapy. She completed advanced training in the areas of performance enhancement and core stabilization for golfers. She has also conducted research on advanced ACL rehabilitation techniques while on a clinical affiliation at the Iowa Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center. Stacy is a graduate of Lanphier High School in Springfield. She was a high school state qualifier in cross country and has completed the Walt Disney and Chicago Marathons. In her spare time, she enjoys watching St. Louis Cardinal baseball.
Michael Hutchinson, DPT is a licensed physical therapist who joined the SportsCare team in August, 2010. Michael is a 2002 graduate of Rochester High School where he played soccer. He continued playing soccer at Southwest Missouri State University and finished his soccer career at the University of Illinois at Springfield. He earned his B.S. in Biology from UIS 2006, and his doctor of physical therapy degree from Bradley University in 2009.
Michael is currently the assistant coach for the Rochester High School boys and girls soccer programs. He has also helped coach for the Springfield High School girl's soccer team. Michael continues to stay active and completed the Chicago marathon in 2009.
Bill O'Connor, PT, SCS, CSCS is a licensed physical therapist with APTA specialist recognition in sports medicine. He is also a certified strength and conditioning specialist. He joined the Memorial Medical Center Rehabilitation Department in 1983 and is one of SportsCare's original team members.
Bill enjoys the challenge of a variety of treatments but is exceptionally qualified and takes pleasure in treating amputees and quadriplegics. His interest in the shoulder has resulted in him being a leader in shoulder rehabilitation.
He has coached youth baseball, youth soccer boys and girls, youth basketball 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade boys, and was head coach for boys basketball in 2003 where he led his team to 2nd place in the IESA. Bill has served as medical support for the Prairie State Games. He is a board member of Lincoln Heritage Soccer League and a member of the APTA Sports Medicine Section.
Matt MSPT, attended Illinois College where he earned a B.S. in Biology, and a M.S. in Physical Therapy from St. Ambrose University.
Matt works at Koke Mill Medical Center where he practices physical and aquatic therapy along with his involvement with SportsCare. His preferred concentrated treatment is neck and back pain, ACL rehabilitation, pediatrics and athletes. Matt was certified in Sportsmetrics™ in 2005 from Cincinnati Sports Research and Education Foundation. He is currently working on a Transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree from St. Ambrose University and McKenzie Certification for Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy.
Matt has been a clinical instructor for physical therapy students and as a member of APTA, and IPTA.
Amanda Wilson, PT, DPT, ATC, earned her B.S. in athletic training in 2007 from Illinois State University, and her DPT from Washington University in St. Louis in 2011. She is a licensed physical therapist, athletic trainer and a member of the APTA.
Amanda has been actively involved with medical coverage for the Special Olympics of Illinois and is an athletic trainer with the Springfield Jr. Blues. She is very active and enjoys running, biking, softball and volleyball in her spare time.
Devin Spears, Lead Athletic Trainer, joined SportsCare in March, 2008. He is responsible for the coordination of SportsCare athletic training activities. He is a Certified Athletic Trainer with a background in Sports Medicine/Performance Enhancement.
He has a B.S. in Physical Education/Athletic Training from Eastern Illinois University, and a M.S. in Sports Medicine & Athletic Training from Illinois State University. Devin is also a Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES) through the National Academy of Sports Medicine, and a certified body fat tester for wrestling through the IHSA.
Devin is actively involved with running, cycling and golf.
Cassie is a Certified Athletic Trainer and is a member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association. She is also a certified Sportsmetrics™ Instructor and a certified Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES) through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. Cassie joined the SportsCare team in Spring 2006. She graduated from Western Illinois University with a B.S. in Physical Education. Cassie also has a M.S. in Exercise Science and Health & Fitness from California University of Pennsylvania. She is also an Certified American Heart Association CPR instructor.
Cassie is committed to serving athletes at New Berlin High School.
Since 2006, Karen Gregory has served as an athletic trainer at SportsCare and a physical education/health teacher for Springfield School District #186.
Karen is certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association and the American Heart Association for CPR and AED. She is a certified instructor in SportsMetrics™, a neuromuscular training regimen that uses strength, coordination and balance exercises to reduce the incidence of knee ligament injuries while playing high-risk sports such as soccer and basketball. Karen is also a Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES) through the National Academy of Sports Medicine, and a certified body fat tester for wrestling through the IHSA.
After earning a B.S. from Eastern Illinois University in 2005, Karen returned to Springfield to become a physical education teacher and athletic trainer at Springfield High School. While at Eastern, she majored in physical education with an option in athletic training, and minored in health education.
Paul Kircher, ATC/L received his B.A. in Exercise Science, B.S. in Physical Education at University of MN, Duluth and M.A. in Exercise Physiology at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Paul is certified by the NATA (National Athletic Trainers Assoc.),NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) as a PES (Performance Enhancement Specialist), and is an American Heart Association CPR and First Aid Instructor. He joined the SportsCare team in February 2001 and is the athletic trainer for Williamsville High School.
In addition to Paul's professional credentials his athletic ability is extensive. He is an avid outdoors man, enjoys watching football, and participates in various sports. Paul is married and has a daughter.
Steve Proctor, ATC, has been a member of the Memorial SportsCare team since 1998.
An honors graduate of the University of Missouri, Steve is certified and licensed in athletic training, body composition assessment and weight training. he is also a certified Sportsmetrics™ instructor and a certified Performance Enhancement Specialist through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. He has worked in the clinical, university and professional sports levels.
Steve enjoys motorcycling and golf.
Gabriel Stinson M.S., PES joined the SportsCare team in 2006. Gabe is a 1996 graduate of Triopia High School where he was member of the football team. After high school, he continued his education at Western Illinois University earning a B.S. in Fitness and a M.S. in Exercise Science. Gabriel is also a Certified Sportsmetrics™ Instructor and a certified Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES) through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. In 2000, Gabe completed a strength and conditioning internship with the New York Yankees at their Spring Training complex.
Gabe works with clients in the Healthy Lifestyle, Sports Enhancement, ACL Bridge, and Kidfit programs. He designs unique workout routines for each individual client.
