About Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a neurological disorder of the brain and spinal cord. It is a debilitating disease in which one’s own immune system eats away the protective sheath (myelin) that covers the nerves. Damage to the myelin interferes with communication between the brain, spinal cord and other areas of the body. Symptoms vary from person to person depending on the amount of damage and nerves affected.

Common MS symptoms include numbness, tingling, spasms, tremors, pain of upper and lower extremities, blurry vision or blindness, fatigue, short and long term memory loss, slurred speech, bowel and bladder dysfunction and for complete paralysis.

The cause of MS is unknown. There is no way to prevent it and there is no cure, although today we have drug therapies to slow down the progression of MS. The disease strikes one in every 1,000 people, affects whites more than other races and more women than men. It typically affects people between the ages of 20 and 60. Over 500,000 American in the US are affected with MS.

Our clinic follows over 800 MS patients primarily from central and southern Illinois. Our goal is to make sure the MS Clinic meets the needs of each and every patient.
