In the past, surgery typically required a large, open incision to give doctors access to internal organs. Today, Memorial Medical Center is proud to offer patients the latest in minimally-invasive surgery through the use of the da Vinci Surgical System.
The da Vinci system enables the surgeon to operate through several small incisions with enhanced capabilities including high-definition 3D vision and a magnified view. Often referred to as "Robotic Surgery," the doctor operates the da Vinci System through a control system, which translates his/her hand movements into smaller, more precise movements of tiny instruments inside the body.
Benefits for patients who undergo a da Vinci procedure include the potential for significantly less post-operative pain, shorter hospital stay, faster return to normal daily activities and better clinical outcomes.
Benefits of da Vinci Surgery
For most patients, robotic surgery performed with the da Vinci Surgical System offers numerous benefits over traditional, open surgery, including:
- Shorter hospital stay
- Less pain and scarring
- Less risk of wound infections
- Less blood loss and fewer transfusions
- Faster recovery
- Quicker return to normal activities
Be sure to ask your referring physician if da Vinci Surgery is an option for you. Memorial Medical Center works with several physicians who are specifically trained and certified in this robotic surgical system.
How da Vinci Surgery Works
Using the da Vinci Surgical System, the surgeon operates while seated comfortably at a console near the patient.
Looking at a 3-D image of the surgical field, the surgeon controls tiny, robotic arms and a camera by using his own fingertips. The surgeon's natural hand and wrist movements are translated into corresponding, precise movements of the surgical instruments inside the patient through incisions measuring between one to two centimeters.
For surgeons, the da Vinci Surgical System provides increased range of motion, improved dexterity and enhanced 3D visualization.
For patients, benefits include shorter hospital stays, less pain, reduced risk of infection, less blood loss, less scarring and faster recovery time.
