How soon will I be discharged?
"Depends, but most patients after laparoscopic gastric bypass are discharged on post operative day #2 or #3. The patient must be tolerating the liquid protein diet, be comfortable on oral pain medication, be fully ambulatory, and have reinitiated bowel function."
When will I be able to return to work?
"Release back to work depends on the patient, but most patients after laparoscopic adjustable gastric band (Lap-Band®) need approximately one week off of work following surgery. Laparoscopic roux-en-y gastric bypass patients will need more time. Learning to adapt to one's new eating lifestyle requires time and concentration. I believe that task is best suited when the patient takes enough time off work to learn to eat appropriately without the normal daily distractions of work and life. This is an important time to learn and this period is valuable to long term success."
When should I begin my activity program?
"The activity program actually starts pre-operatively and resumes shortly after bariatric surgery. Actually, the night of surgery is the first walking activity. This progresses daily. Upon discharge, the patient should be able to perform 15-30 minutes of walking several times a day.
"After 1-2 weeks, one can then begin to add intensity to their exercise regimen. For there on, 'the sky is the limit.'
"A long term activity plan generally involves a daily period of exercise of one's choice for a minimum of 45 minutes. Marathon jogging is reserved for the truly determined individual although several of our patients have participated in such endeavors. It is part of their 'take control of their lives' regimen."
How fast will I lose weight after bariatric surgery?
"Most of our patients lose weight pre-operatively as a result of our recommended pre-surgical diet. Post-operatively, gastric bypass patients lose more rapidly compared to Lap-Band® patients. Weight loss is usually noted even by the first post-op visit 7-10 days after surgery. We will photograph and weigh you at each visit and continually track your results."
