Nurse Residency Program for New Graduates

UHC/AACN Nurse Residency Program at Memorial Medical CenterSince 2002 the UHC/AACN Nurse Residency Program has provided health care organizations with a transition-to-practice program for new graduate nurses. This transition to competent nursing practice is supported by an evidence-based curriculum that is customized to reflect the values and mission of Memorial Medical Center.

Program Requirements:

  • Mandatory participation of all new graduate nurses
  • One year in length with monthly meetings (minimum duration of four hours)
  • Required participation in an evidence-based practice project

Facilitators guide monthly discussions, work with the nurse residents to identify learning needs, serve as experienced nurse experts, and guide the residents’ evidence-based project efforts.

New Graduate Nurse Support Structure

From your first day of orientation, you’ll experience a support network as you transition to your new role. At Memorial, we recognize that new graduates are “new” in their role for the first 12-18 months of practice. Nursing professionals will guide your growth and development and provide the level of support you expect as a new graduate nurse. Our program structure includes:

  • New Employee Orientation
  • Nursing Team Onboarding
  • Specialty unit-based orientation with hands-on learning to provide new graduate nurses the skills and knowledge needed to provide expert nursing care in your chosen specialty
  • Trained preceptors to guide orientation and assist in validating competencies
  • Weekly meetings with nurse managers to provide support, review ongoing developmental needs, and assure a successful transition to the new role
  • Assignment to a veteran RN mentor who helps the new nurse adapt to Memorial and the RN role during the first year of practice
