Grant in Action: An Investment in the Future

Nursing students benefit from learning laboratory

Undergraduate nursing students at the Springfield Regional Campus of the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing, are experiencing hands-on learning thanks to a $69,000 grant from the Foundation.

These manikins allow our students to learn and practice skills in the safe environment of the lab rather than on the clinical unit with real patients. Students are able to become proficient with skills before they do them at the hospital.

Ten manikins allow the students to practice patient situations, including wound care, IV insertion, medication administration and bathing. The manikins also can be used for simulation scenarios, such as deciding if an elderly patient who is at risk of falling is able to go home.

“These manikins allow our students to learn and practice skills in the safe environment of the lab rather than on the clinical unit with real patients. Students are able to become proficient with skills before they do them at the hospital,” said Dr. Cynthia Reese, clinical associate professor and Springfield campus regional director. “The manikins allow us to provide high-quality, state of the art nursing education here in Springfield. We could not have done this without the generosity of the Foundation’s donors. They made an investment in the future nurses who will care for the central Illinois community.”
