Grant in Action: Feeding Tube Insertion

Innovative training for clinical staff

Thanks to a grant from the Memorial Medical Center Foundation, our nurses and dietitians are working together to strengthen skills and improve patient safety by using cutting-edge, clinical simulation learning.

Providing adequate training and ensuring ongoing staff competency are critical components of a successful feeding tube insertion program.

This cutting-edge clinical simulation provides nurses and dietitians the opportunity to learn how to safely and effectively insert small bowel feeding tubes at the patient’s bedside, ensuring the patient has access for medications, fluids, and nutrition therapy. This procedure is performed about 250 times per year and typically occurs in the Intensive Care Unit, according to Christina Rollins, director of Memorial’s Food and Nutrition Services.
