Breast Cancer Support Group


The breast cancer support group is open to breast cancer survivors, their spouses, family, and friends.

The group focuses on recognizing the physical and psychological trauma that results from the loss of a breast; learning how to deal effectively with feelings related to fears, anxiety, loss and acceptance; acknowledging the role of the family in giving and receiving support; providing women with more information in making informed decisions about their treatment; and, providing social activities with family and friends.

Invite breast cancer survivors to come listen or share their story in relaxed environment. Includes refreshments.

March 13, 2018    Introduction of Naomi Wands, RN as Community Cancer Education Coordinator Discussion Topic - “Getting to know each other.”   We will do an icebreaker game, talk about future meetings, and fill out information cards.

April 10, 2018      Discussion Topic - Sharing your story: Each person will be given a chance to share their story.  We will do a timeline with years of diagnosis and discuss high and low points of each journey.

May 8, 2018          Discussion Topic - Guest Speaker – Jodi Bangert, Nurse Practitioner @ Springfield Clinic will talk about Genetic/hereditary risks associated with Breast Cancer.  Open meeting:  Feel free to invite your friends/family! 

June 12, 2018        Discussion Topic - Guest Speaker – Chrissy Tucker, Quality Data Analyst Nurse @ Springfield Clinic will talk about Exercise & Breast Cancer.  We will also talk about Relay for Life.

July 10, 2018         Discussion Topic – Guest Speaker – Dr. Mary Bretscher, Oncologist will discuss Photography for healing/art therapy 

August 14, 2018    Discussion Topic – Lymphedema – Prevention, treatment & exercise

September 11, 2018    Discussion Topic - Guest Speaker – Bonnie Landwehr, LCSW @ Memorial Behavioral Health will be talking about Overcoming Fear of Reoccurrence & Health Coping Strategies.

October 9, 2018         Discussion TopicTaking care of the “girls” – Breast self-exam and skin care.  Breast Cancer Awareness Month -Wear Pink to show support! We will also discuss the upcoming Be Aware Women’s fair on October 13, 2018 and sign up for November Winter Social.

November 13, 2018    Winter Social – You are invited to meet for a meal @ Olive Garden, please RSVP by November 1, 2018 to or 217-757-7684.

December 2018          No Meeting.  Breast Cancer Support Group meetings will resume in January.
