SAGE: Southern and Central Illinois Advisory Group for Ethics
A Leading Provider of Ethics Education and Training in Ethics Consultation
Ethics lies at the core of medicine. Yet, the complex web of legal concerns, technology, financial considerations and institutional viability can have a profound effect on moral choices. In addition to training specialists, SAGE can help change the heathcare environment by raising the general level of awareness of what constitutes a moral issue by educating staff on the range of ethically acceptable choices.
This process includes educating ethics committees or new members of established committees, as well as providing resources and advice to existing healthcare providers so they can keep up-to-date with the many complex tasks expected of them in today's environment.
Medical Ethics Training
Enroll two persons for Ethics Specialist training. At the end of their training, these persons will be knowledgeable in relevant Illinois and national healthcare laws (i.e., Healthcare Surrogate Act, Durable Power of Attorney, Living Will Act and Patient Self-Determination Act); gain expertise in addressing JCAHO and CMS standards in ethics and patient rights and responding to HIPPA requirements; acquire skills necessary to document ethics involvement in the medical record and perform decisional capacity assessments. In addition, they will receive training in moral reasoning and justification, identification of moral issues and moral principles and theory.
